so we're in chiang mai, and at my favorite guest house. things have been solid and packed - eliza, shea and i booked a trek yesterday, even though i swore i'd never again do a day trek, they're so cheesy. but they picked us up in this songthaew, which is like a pick up with a covered back and benches, so right away it was much cooler than an air conditioned mini bus where you meet no one. our company was awesome, this brazillian guy and girl who were travelling together, (and gorgeous - both of them), eliza, shea, me, this south african guy who was super hot but so freakin' arrogant (but nice enough), this nice canadian girl (aren't we all nice?) and these two japanese guys who were narcoleptic, i'm sure. they were hilarious - hippy japanese guys. didn't speak more than two words of english, "kamikaze!" and "crazy!". one guy had to hang out the back of the truck the entire way.
we started out at an orchid farm, which was, well, a bunch of orchids. there was also a butterfly farm, but we only found one butterfly and it looked like it had been beaten up by a bunch of other butterflies who had then escaped. we then went to a "long neck tribe" which was so completely fake it was awesome. there was only one true longneck woman, the rest just had the rings that came off every night. whatever, i bought a nice scarf that i paid way too much for.
on to our bamboo raft ride, which was awesome, we floated down this awesome jungle river with the coolest of the bunch, then headed back to ride some elephants. since we had an odd number, eliza offered to ride on the neck of the elephant. which was all fun and games until we headed down this giant steep hill. holy shit, i was clinging onto the basket for dear life, she was hanging on to ME (i kept saying "HANG ON TO THE BASKET! NOT ME! AAAAAAAAGH! if she fell off of our giant elephant, we'd both be going, and two broken kids might be more than my parents could bear). eliza was, quite simply, shitting her pants. she kept saying "uh, this wasn't a good idea. THIS WAS NOT A GOOD IDEA". she had nothing to hold on to. and believe you me, it was steep. once i have more time i'm going to upload some video and some pictures.
anyway, they fed us full of pad thai, then we hit this other tribe to buy junk. these two little kids, maybe 2, were playing, and the second someone pulled out a camera they made the peace sign and yelled CHEEEEEEEEEEEEESE! ha. exposed to tourists much?
then - the waterfall. the waterfall was awesome, a nice scary hike in to this clear, clean pool we could wade/swim in. or, if you're the japanese guy, fall in. overall, the group of people we were with were awesome, and it was good times had by all. a dusty, bumpy truck ride back into town got us to the beer, then we hit the night bazaar and did some shopping. that place is dangerous - so cheap. i'm happy to report i replaced my white cotton thai tunic that i wore out just this summer for cheaper than i bought my first one (i'm getting better at bartering). we met the others for some drinks at a bar then headed home. this trek was so much better than last time i was here.
today we're detouring to pai for a couple of days - i love pai. it's the epitome of relaxing thai living in the country. then, friday, shea and i are heading into laos - via slow boat. that's right, two days on the mekhong river in a long wooden boat, floating through the jungle to loang prabang. we'll spend a night in a fishermens village along the way. so, we're going to be MIA for a bit. can't wait - and shea is really enjoying the country, so that makes me happy. we'll get to the beach eventually.
love and kisses from northern thailand,
tasha.

DID YOU GIRLS FORGET EVERYTHING I TAUGHT YOU !!! ELEPHANTS ARE DANGEROUS AND LAY OFF THE BEER.
MISS YOU
Tasha, I love your mum. She is great. I also agree about the Brazilians
Did you know that elephants are one of the leading causes of death in the neck of the world? Worse than grizzly bears. Hope you packed some elephant spray and elephant bangers. Oh, and Mel and I met a Brazillian...in the lineup at CJ's...not so beautiful. Glad you are having fun.
